This table is based on the first periodic table of the elements published in 1869 by the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev (1834-1907), who arranged the chemical elements in order of increasing atomic weight Mendeleev noticed that the chemical properties of the elements and their compounds showed a periodic trend. He placed the elements with similar properties below each other in groups. He left gaps for yet to be discovered elements and predicted their likely properties
